About Teaching Through Nature

Our Philosophy

At Teaching Through Nature, we believe children are born curious, capable, and full of wonder. Nature offers the richest classroom-one that invites inquiry, imagination, resilience, and connection. Through mud, sticks, stones, leaves, weather, and play, children come to understand not only the world around them, but also themselves and their place within it.

Our philosophy is grounded in the belief that nature-based experiences nurture the whole child-physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. Learning about nature and time spent outdoors supports well-being, builds confidence, encourages problem-solving, and fosters a sense of belonging in one's self.

We value play as the foundation of early learning. When children are given time and opportunity to explore natural spaces and materials, learning unfolds organically. We feel children are active participants in their learning, capable of taking age-appropriate risks and developing empathy for living things. We aim to inspire, support, and empower educators and parents to embrace nature as a part of their daily curriculum.

WELCOME!

I am a mother and grandmother who has worked in the early childhood field for over 30 years. I have worked with various ages, in numerous roles, and in varied learning settings. I have my Master of Education in Early Childhood Education & Special Education and work full-time as a PreK teacher. When I am not teaching, I am spending time with my family and my two dogs, Lenny Lou and Sugar. We have a camp that is our family’s happy place, and it is where we enjoy campfires, swimming, hiking, spending time together, and exploring the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire!

WELCOME!

I am a passionate nature-based preschool teacher who believes children's learning should be filled with exploration, wonder, and connection to the natural world. My approach blends early childhood education with outdoor, play-based learning that supports social-emotional growth, creativity, and confidence, while building a lifelong love of nature. I have a Bachelors degree in Adventure Education from Plymouth State University and have been teaching ages 4-6 for over 2 years.

Why Nature-Based Learning?

Miss Rhona:

I remember as a child, playing endlessly outdoors. We invented games, built amazing forts from simple sticks and stones, and baked mud pies in the sun like we were professional chefs! We played in the hot sun, in the pouring rain, and in the cold snow. We were explorers! We were inventors! We were builders! We got messy! Every day we used our imaginations. We were so busy having fun that there was never time to be bored, and I often think of those younger years, when I think of ways to bring nature to my students.

Not every school has a wooded area or a field to offer a completely-outdoors learning experience, nor is the weather always accommodating for outdoor adventures, but I truly believe that nature CAN BE a huge part of any early childhood curriculum, even in a brick-and-mortar classroom! Nature can be embedded in so many creative ways! Through lessons and activities, manipulatives and materials, songs and books, classroom set-up and décor…nature can become an integral part of YOUR early childhood environment!

Miss Abby and I want to share the wonders of nature-based learning with YOU! We want to assist fellow teachers, childcare givers, homeschoolers, and parents in providing early learning that captures curiosity, inspires creativity, promotes critical thinking, builds strong academic skills, and fosters self-confidence.

Teaching Through Nature is here to help YOU bring nature into YOUR classroom!
